Starting off on the right foot to make great public spaces: Alex Garvin’s tour of mid-town Manhattan. Taking his class was one of the more painful parts of grad school—it was difficult to step out of studio where you get to make designs instead of define them, but the more distance I get from those afternoons in Hastings Hall and today, the more appreciation I have for what Garvin is trying to get everyone, not just architects, to understand about the public realm.
